How we collect, use and protect your data.
Who Is Responsible
RedCorner LLC is the data controller for ButBecause. This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, and the choices you have. You can reach us at [email protected].
Data We Collect
Account data: username, name, email address, hashed password, timezone, language and account type. Content you create: posts, votes, comments, media, messages and reports. Technical and usage data: IP address, device and browser information, server logs and interaction events. Uploaded media may include technical metadata such as dimensions.
How We Use Your Data
We use your data to provide and operate the service, show you relevant content, keep the platform safe (fraud and abuse prevention, moderation), send notifications, measure and improve features, and comply with legal obligations. We rely on our own internal metrics; we do not use third-party analytics trackers.
Advertising
Ads are currently selected on a contextual and general basis — not from a behavioral profile of you. We measure ad performance (impressions, viewability, clicks) and share results with advertisers only in aggregate form that does not identify you. If our approach to ad targeting changes, we will update this policy first.
Private Messages
Direct and group messages are stored on our servers and are not end-to-end encrypted. We do not read them routinely; they may be reviewed when reported or where necessary for safety or legal reasons. Deleted messages are replaced with a deletion notice and may persist in backups for a limited time.
When We Share Data
We never sell your personal data. We share it only with infrastructure providers that host and deliver the service (EU-region hosting with Hetzner; Cloudflare's CDN for media delivery), when the law requires it, when necessary to protect rights and safety, or as part of a merger or acquisition, in which case we will notify you.
International Transfers
Your data is primarily stored in the European Union. Because our company is based in the United States and our content delivery network operates globally, your data may be processed outside your country. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for such transfers.
Data Retention
We keep your data while your account is active. When you request deletion, your account enters a grace period of about 30 days and is then permanently removed. Server logs and backups are kept for limited periods, and some records may be retained where the law requires it.
Your Rights
Depending on where you live (including under GDPR and Turkey's KVKK), you may have the right to access, correct, delete or receive a copy of your data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You can exercise most of these through account settings or by writing to [email protected]. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Children
ButBecause is not directed to children under 13, or under the higher minimum age in your country. We do not knowingly collect their data, and we delete accounts belonging to children when we become aware of them.
Security
We protect your data with measures such as encryption in transit, hashed passwords and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but if a breach affecting you occurs we will notify you as the law requires.
