Community Guidelines
ButBecause is a platform where ideas are debated with “but” and “because”. Here you can disagree with a view, push back and explain why. Pushing back is allowed; attacking the person is not. These rules apply to everyone: individual accounts, creators, businesses and brands.
Core principles
Challenge the idea, not the person. A “but” comment targets a view, not the person who holds it. Say why. A “because” comment supports a claim. Share your reasoning instead of unfounded claims. Be real. Take part as yourself. Don't pretend to be someone else or create fake accounts. Respect the platform. Don't abuse its systems or manufacture artificial engagement.
Prohibited content and behavior
The following content is removed and may lead to account sanctions. Spam and unwanted content: Repetitive posts, irrelevant advertising, mass mentions, writing the same comment on many posts, misleading titles to farm engagement. Scams and fraud: Deceptive content aimed at obtaining money, account details or personal data. Fake giveaways, fake investment promises, phishing links. Harassment and hate speech: Abusive content targeting a person or a group. Demeaning or hateful statements based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability or identity. Bullying and threats: Intimidation, threats, blackmail or persistently harassing someone. Trying to get around someone's block with other accounts also falls under this. Violence and dangerous behavior: Content that glorifies or incites violence or encourages dangerous acts. Content that encourages self-harm. Illegal activity: Promoting or selling drugs, weapons, forged documents or illegal services. Sexual content: Nudity, pornographic or adult-oriented content. Intimate images shared without consent and any sexual exploitation content are removed immediately, the account is permanently closed and, where required, reported to the authorities. Misleading information: Presenting inaccurate and potentially harmful information as fact. Sharing opinions is allowed; presenting an opinion as proven fact is not. Copyright infringement: Sharing someone else's images, videos, audio or text without permission as if it were your own. Impersonation and fake accounts: Accounts impersonating another person, brand or organization. Accounts that do not represent a real person. Parody accounts are allowed if clearly stated in the profile.
Account and profile rules
You must be at least 13 years old to use ButBecause. Your username may only contain letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Reserved names related to brands, organizations or the platform cannot be used. All fields, including your profile name and bio, are subject to these rules. You cannot transfer or sell your account to someone else. Registration is by invitation only. A follow relationship with the person who invited you is created automatically; don't abuse it.
Brands, tag ownership and official responses
A brand can apply for ownership of the tag (hashtag) carrying its name. The application is approved after review once the company details are verified. A brand that owns a tag can write official responses to public posts shared with that tag. An official response is also a “but” or a “because” and is subject to these rules in full. Official responses cannot be used to silence, threaten or belittle a user. A brand must accept criticism too; it can only offer a counter-view. Acting as if you own a tag you don't, applying on behalf of someone else's brand or providing false company details leads to account closure. Brand accounts are equally subject to the spam, fraud and harassment rules. Accounts that violate the advertising rules may additionally have their advertising rights suspended.
Invitations and credits
Invitation codes are single-use and are generated in exchange for one credit. Inviting yourself, earning credits with fake accounts, selling invitation codes or producing artificial posts to earn credits is prohibited. If abuse is detected, earned credits and invitation rights are revoked and the account is subject to sanctions.
Privacy and safety
Don't share other people's phone numbers, addresses, identity details or private conversations without permission. Content of private accounts is visible only to the followers they approve. Don't take that content elsewhere. Direct messages open only with mutual follows. Don't use another account to get around this. Someone you block cannot see you or your content. Trying to get around a block counts as harassment. You are responsible for your account's security. Don't share your password with anyone.
Reporting and moderation
How to report: Every post, comment, message and profile has a “Report” option. Choose a reason; some reasons ask for a short explanation. The same content can be reported once. You cannot report your own content. Review of reports: Every report opens as “pending”; our team reviews it and reaches a decision. Unjustified or malicious reports are also a violation; don't use the reporting system to target someone.
Possible sanctions
Depending on the severity and repetition of the violation: Warning: A warning is recorded on the account; access continues. Content hiding / removal: The post or comment becomes invisible or is deleted. Tag restriction: A tag can be hidden in certain regions or for a period of time. Temporary suspension: The account is closed for between 1 day and 10 years and reopens automatically when the period ends. Permanent closure: The account is closed permanently and all sessions are ended. Serious violations (sexual exploitation, threats of violence, fraud) can result in permanent closure on the first occurrence. Effect of warnings and suspensions: Accounts that received a warning, suspension or closure in the last 90 days cannot apply for a verification badge or a creator / business account. Appeals: If you believe a sanction is wrong, write to [email protected] with your account name. Appeals are reviewed in order.
Account deletion
You can request deletion of your account from settings. The account stays inactive for 30 days; during this period you can cancel the deletion by signing in. At the end of the 30 days the account and your personal data are permanently deleted and your content is anonymized.
Updates to these rules
These rules are updated from time to time. We will inform you of significant changes. Continuing to use the platform means you accept the current rules. Questions: [email protected]
